Our food co-op will look like a typical grocery store where anyone can shop. The difference is that members own the store and every member has an equal vote.
Already familiar
We already belong to a co-op.
Here on our island, we already have experience with a co-op through Tanner Electric, which provides our electricity. In a co-op, decisions stay close to home and shared ownership spreads responsibility. A member-owned store can remain a community resource beyond any one person.
Why this model
Built for long-term stability.
We are building a new model, not simply recreating the old store. The work begins with community listening, responsible capitalization, sound planning, reserves, and a store plan focused on the things island households use most.

Voluntary and open membership
Open to all who can use the co-op’s services and accept the responsibilities of membership, without discrimination.
Democratic member control
Members help set policy and make decisions. In a primary cooperative, the basic rule is one member, one vote.
Member economic participation
Members contribute equitably to, and democratically control, the capital of their cooperative.
Autonomy and independence
The cooperative is a self-help organization controlled by its members.
Education, training, and information
Co-ops educate members, leaders, employees, and the public about cooperation and how the model works.
Cooperation among cooperatives
Co-ops serve members more effectively by working with other cooperatives locally, regionally, and beyond.
Concern for community
Co-ops work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies approved by members.
Member-owned, open to all
Shopping and ownership are not the same thing.
Anyone will be able to shop. Membership will add ownership and a vote, but memberships are not available yet and the details are still being developed.
